  • SHM is produced by the action of a force that is directed towards a fixed point and is proportional to the distance from the point.
  • SHM is NOT a uniform motion.
  • In S.H.M.
    • Displacement is always directed away from the mean position.
    • Force is always directed towards the mean position (always directed opposite to the displacement).
    • Acceleration is always directed towards the mean position. (always directed opposite to the displacement).
    • Velocity is either directed towards or away from the mean position.
  • In SHM as magnitude of acceleration is not constant, equation of translator motion cannot be applied.
  • The graph between acceleration and displacement of a particle executing S.H.M. is a straight line.
  • The graph between velocity and displacement of a particle executing SHM is a ellipse.
  • In SHM a particle passes through its mean position twice during each vibration.
  • If bob of the pendulum is charged and it is vibrated on the metal sheet then the time period of the pendulum decreases.
  • If the pendulum is suspended in vacuum, then the time period of the pendulum decreases.
  • A pendulum clock goes slow in summer and fast in winter.
  • In absence of resistive force the work done by a simple pendulum in one complete oscillation is zero.
  • The graph between acceleration and displacement is a straight line passing through origin, whose slope is -ω2.
  • The graph between the velocity and acceleration is an ellipse and if ω=1 then it is a circle.
  • Oscillations in which amplitude decreases progressively due to dissipative forces are called damped oscillations.
  • SHM is not a uniform motion.
